Has your brain been on a mental vacation this summer? If you’ve been feeling more forgetful than usual, don’t worry, most people struggle to remember the little things because they get sidetracked by something else. In this article, we have discussed some major tricks for boosting memory and sharpening your brain game.
Your brain will often take “side trips” because it’s working so fast during conversations that while you’re talking, your brain is actually still thinking. Your mind moves five times faster than you speak, so during that void, it’s easy to forget your original point altogether!
Tricks for boosting memory
What we do tend to remember is what’s important to us. Your brain associates what’s important with “why it’s important” and “what’s in it for you” – the value. For those things that your brain doesn’t naturally retain, here are some classroom strategies that will help you boost memory and sharpen your brain game.
1. Underline it.
A good teacher will say something like, “Pay attention, this is going to be on your test”. The student remembers that because it was pointed out as being important.
2. Repeat it.
Repetition is the key. Most people need to hear things at least eight times, some 16 and some even 32! If the teacher appears when the student is ready, it’s repetition that will ensure an important piece of information is retained.
3. Make it catchy.
You all remember the old saying “Thirty days has September, April, June and November”. It’s catchy, and honestly a little annoying, but you remember 100% of it. Consider that jingle you hear over and over on the radio. It’s outrageous and you just can’t get it out of your mind. Marketing people understand these concepts and want you to remember who they are and what they do. It will work for you, too.
