The classic WordPress setup which needed a long due update has finally bought a Gutenberg editor in the market. The goal of which is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable. Settling on to an updated version is always a bit heavy on the mind. Nobody can get to core features spontaneously. It takes time, viewing tutorials, and reading up a couple of articles on the topic and you get the hang of it.
In this article, I will discuss a Gutenberg feature which has left us all a bit confused. i.e., word count feature. It’s something that I personally want to keep track of. Not just me I think many writers set themselves a target number of words per day, as a good habit. Whether your target is 500, 1000, 2000 or even more words, a lot of writers love the discipline of hitting a daily target. Some other writers are aiming for a specific word count simply for marketing purposes. It’s generally thought that Google gives a higher rank to longer posts, so long as they’re interesting. So many SEO experts recommend you write posts between 2000 and 2500 words.
In the classic editor, it’s right at the bottom which was super easy to pick.

Word Count in the WordPress Gutenberg editor:
For the Gutenberg editor, the location changed. You can now find the word count at the top. By clicking on the Content structure icon. This plugin replaces the word count info in bottom of the edit post window by the characters/words count (on the fly). Additionally, you can limit the characters/words to count for defined user roles.

The good thing is new Gutenberg Editor has more to offer than the classic one. The Gutenberg editor doesn’t only show you the word count. It also shows you the number of Headings, Paragraphs, and Blocks. So in short For many reasons, it can be useful to track your word count in WordPress. It can help to set a target, a maximum or a minimum number of words to write in a WordPress post.
