Romantic Valentine's Dinner

There is nothing I try to avoid more than going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day— it’s difficult to get a reservation, the menu is limited, the restaurant is overcrowded, and the wait staff is overworked. I prefer to postpone my dinner out for a less busy time and celebrate St. Valentine’s at home and host a romantic Valentine’s dinner for my sweetheart.

Yes, it is possible to pull together a romantic meal and carve out a little time with the one you love, despite the distractions of home. Here’s how to make it happen:

Dim the lights

Light the candles to set the mood for some quality time with your special Valentine.

Make the dining room an adult’s-only zone

Make the dining room an adult’s-only zone for the evening. Set the table with your best china, crystal and flatware – no superhero or princess plates in sight.

Bring on the bubbly.

Nothing sets the stage for celebration and romance more than champagne. Pick up a special bottle, chill it, and you’re good to go!

Prepare a simple feast for two.

Go with make-ahead dishes that incorporate his/her favorites and will keep you out of the kitchen.

Unplug

We know how difficult this is, but as soon as you pop the cork on the champagne and begin to nibble on the canapés, put the phones, tablets and laptops away. Turn off the television and turn on some music, picking tunes that have some special significance for you both.

Set your boundaries for an uninterrupted evening.

Chat with your kids and let them know this is special “Mommy and Daddy” time. If you have little ones, feed them dinner early. When it’s time for bed, have your husband/partner tuck them while you dress for the occasion. If you have older kids, make it a fun evening for them as well. Order pizza and have a special movie set up and ready to go for them to enjoy.

If your kids are older, you may want to recruit them as helpers – they can be the waiter/waitress for the evening, and the clean-up crew!
