I’m very happy to be sharing the Egyptian Butter Cookies Recipe with you. I’m very blessed that my mother taught me how to make them. It is my favorite recipe and once you try these cookies, you’ll know why! These are synonymous with nostalgia and the holiday season! Ingredients
- ½ cup butter
- ¼ cups flour
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¾ cup powdered sugar
- ½ tsp baking powder
- 2 eggs
- 24 almond slivers
- Cocoa powder, if you want to make the chocolate ones
- Sprinkles or chocolate for decoration
Directions to make the best Egyptian Butter Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 290 degrees.
- Whip the butter slightly (do melt completely).
- Mix the butter using a hand-held electric mixer. Do not mix at high speed. Keep it low here. Add powdered sugar and mix for 3 minutes until very smooth, white, and fluffy (now you can increase mixer speed).
- Add the vanilla extract and mix thoroughly. Now, add two eggs and mix for about 1 minute at low temperature (room temperature as well).
- Now, you’re done with the electric mixer at this point. Take a separate bowl, add flour in stages (start with 1 cup), and add baking powder, and salt together.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix them together with a spatula (do not use the mixer as it will change the consistency of the dough). Mix the dough to have a light, crumbly texture.
- Divide it into two bowls, one for vanilla and one for chocolate. Add cocoa powder to a bowl. Mix it thoroughly, and add more cocoa powder if you want cookies darker.
- Make small walnut-sized balls for cookie formation. Lightly press on top of the dough. Arrange the shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (place with a little space in between). Gently press the slivered almonds on top of the butter cookies.
- If you like sprinkles on cookies, add any of the sprinkles now. It would be the perfect time so it can stick to the cookie flawlessly. You can also add the tasty mini chocolate chips to the cookies if you like!
- I used to decorate the cookies with cookie icing or melted chocolate after they were baked. You can also try them out!
- Place in a preheated oven and bake at 350 degrees F for 12 to 15 minutes. Check the bottom to gain a little color (do not let the cookies turn extremely dark. the Golden hue color will be perfect!)
- Finally, remove cookies from the oven and set them aside to cool completely. They will burn if leave them too long. Make sure to check on them regularly as cooking time also varies depending on each oven.
- Moreover, you can store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
Tips
When measuring flour, spoon it into a dry cup and level off the excess flour. If you scoop directly from the bag, it can compact the flour resulting in dry baked cookies.
