We had an opportunity to speak with Dr. Ram Mani Bhandari from Sunshine Ayurveda. We tried to understand how Ayurveda can be beneficial for your regular health needs.

Dr. Ram is an experienced holistic doctor Specialized in Ayurvedic detox (Panchakarma). He holds a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) from a reputed university in Kathmandu, Nepal. In Australia, he is based on the Sunshine Coast. He is a professional member of Australasian Association of Ayurveda (AAA) and owner of Sunshine Ayurveda.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the oldest holistic science of healing in the universe. With more than 5000 years of history and practice in the Indian subcontinent, it is referred to as the “Mother medicinal system”, Ayurveda’s teachings are both timeless and time-tested. It is a holistic system of healing, the art of living, plant-based medicinal system, the art of being, and much more. Ayurveda is largely based on lifestyle, which includes diet, sleep, exercise, day-to-day activities, emotions, spiritual practices, and many more.

Why is Ayurveda different to other system?

In Ayurveda, we consider each and every person to have four components of life; body, mind, senses and spirit. Ayurveda states that health and wellness depends on a delicate balance between body, mind and spirit. The main goal of Ayurveda is to promote good health and prevent illness, not fight disease.

How is Ayurveda practice in Australia?

Ayurveda is well accepted by Australian community and recognised as a complimentary health medicine system.

Ayurveda has its existence in Australia since 1988 when Australasian Association of Ayurveda (AAA) was founded. Ayurveda graduates from the university of India, Nepal and Srilanka can get a professional membership of AAA and practice Ayurvedic Medicine in Australia. Recently there is a remarkable increase of inquiries for Ayurvedic treatments, Ayurvedic Consultation, Panchakarma detox, Ayurvedic diet and herbs etc.

What is an Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle consultation?

An Ayurvedic consultation is the first step in your search for a holistic approach to healthcare. You may not necessarily have any health issues, but simply want to improve your health status. The Ayurvedic doctor will use special Ayurvedic diagnostic tools, namely, pulse diagnosis, and tongue diagnosis, to ascertain your doshas and determine the state of your body balance or imbalance.

The initial consultation aims to deliver an accurate health assessment, and to guide you on how to plan your diet, including the administration of herbs and home remedies. You will be advised on lifestyle, exercise routines and treatments best suited to your mind-body constitution.

What is your final message to the beginners of Ayurveda?

The wisdom of Ayurveda is as applicable to life in today’s fast paced lifestyle. The first step in applying Ayurvedic principles and treatments is to assist in any health related concerns;  to determine your mind-body constitution (Prakriti). If you don’t know your Prakriti, meet an Ayurvedic doctor for an Ayurvedic consultation before you try Ayurveda and any other Ayurvedic herbs and therapies.
